The 2005 maze design idea actually came to Alan in a dream. He woke up suddenly in the night with the thought, “What if we did a Hey Diddle Diddle maze?” And with that the maze was brought to life. Hey Diddle Diddle is an English nursery rhyme originally published circa 1765. The rhyme in full is:
Hey diddle diddle,
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
The little dog laughed
To see such sport,
And the dish ran away with the spoon.
If you look closely, you can find all parts of the rhyme within the maze design. Did you know that the saying “over the moon” to describe happiness actually came from this rhyme?
As part of the Cat and the Fiddle Maze theme, we also had various nursery rhymes throughout the farm. We loved hearing from visitors about what nursery rhymes they had grown up with.
The Cat and the Fiddle Maze was designed by family friend and local artist Parnell Nelson.
