Here at Treinen Farm we have pretty much always been obsessed with dragons. Our 2003 Here There Be Dragons Corn Maze brought to life that obsession, with the added bonus that it looked like the dragon was breathing fire at the farm.
The dragon was special as it was the one and only time that flowers were used in the corn maze design. Orange marigolds made up the dragon’s flame breath, creating a stunning visual from the sky. However, Angie has reported that keeping flowers alive and weed-free was way harder than corn and she will probably not be repeating that design element.
In the early days of the maze, we were learning a lot about what makes a good maze. There was only a single way to get through the dragon’s wing, and if you missed it, you ended up in a long dead end. Some people got really frustrated and there was a lot of cutting through the corn that year. Since then, we have made the paths much more interconnected with no long dead ends and we currently have very few places where people cut through the corn.
